    Happy Holidays from SoLA

First, to Jerry, the mods, all my GH brothers & sisters, and especially my LaConn brethren: Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to those of all faiths. I would also like to acknowledge those whom have family members and friends that are serving in our country's armed forces: May they be blessed, protected and returned home safely and soon.

The wife and I took a field trip down to the "river parishes" to view the bonfires which will be lit tonight. In one of SoLA's longest standing Christmas traditions, families that live along the river have been building the bonfires for generations. They are lit on Christmas eve to help Santa find his way along the mighty Mississippi. It is my understanding that this SoLA tradition has become just as important as NORAD and area airport control towers in aiding Santa to navigate through the southern regions of the US.

All though the structures are fairly simple now, in years past the were quite elaborate: Over-sized trucks, log cabins, fighter planes and one year the space shuttle. As I understand it, an accident w/an injury caused a bonfire "building code" to be implemented.

Here are a few pix from today (Please use this thread to post up some of your area/family/community traditions)
