Question '06-up plastic thing on cam sprocket?

I have manuals for and am very familiar with the 04-05 engine setup, but am helping a friend with an '08 with the plastic thing that snaps on the cam sprocket. I don't have a manual for this engine, so ...

    1. How is this removed without breaking it?
    2. How does the flat metal part fit in the plastic thing? What holds it in?
    3. What is the purpose of the plastic thing/flat metal part?

It looks like the sensor that plugs in is different too ... just not as familiar with this setup, hoping someone can answer my dumb questions ...

The plastic is keyed to the sprocket the D-shaped washer sits inside the plastic and the TOP's valve seal holds it all in place.

I don't think you can remove the plastic cover from the gear while it's in the head - but don't drop that damn washer/spacer - Been there done that .

Ocman - Did you remove the plastic part before you removed the gear from the motor? - I still think - you have to take it out attached to the gear - you can remove the bolts once the metal washer is removed with the plastic piece attached - I think the pickup keeps you from removing the plastic - but no matter - happy holidays to all

No, I never touched the plastic piece. Maybe we misunderstood what you said?
