    SLH Compression

I bought a 1999 SLH from a guy who said that the engine had been rebuilt recently, and that he hadn't even finished the break in period. I got a great deal on it, and it ran...so I went ahead and got it. I checked compression this weekend one cylinder was 144 psi, the other was 130 psi. I know they are supposed to be within 10% (its on the edge)....will these even out, or am I going to have to do an upper rebuild soon?

Who did the engine rebuild? Professional shop, the previous owner?

Regarding compression, I suggest you run it like that and recheck again after a couple of hours. If the difference remains then you may want to pull the heads off and examine why.

Take the time to check, maintain and upgrade all the things that are recommended, such as fuel system, carburetor rebuild, etc.

How much break-in time is on the engine?

Was it broken in properly, with the recommended heat-cool cycles and gradual max RPM increases?

I have no idea. My guess is probably not, but I suppose I could ask him...

How was the comp test performed, both plugs out, throttle wide open, is the battery fully charged?
Also: did you check each cylinder a few times?

Both plugs out, wide open throttle, only checked once...not sure about battery charge. It was enough to start it after the test was done. It was cold when I tested too, 38 degrees.

Maybe put some 2-stroke oil in the cylinder and try the test again? Could there be that much difference if the motor has not been broken in?

Just talked to the previous owner again. He said that it was a professional shop here locally that did the rebuild, and that it wasn't even through the first tank of premix yet. He didn't mention a specific break-in procedure, which means he probably rode normally except for the premix gas in addition to the injection.
