    FZR Tacho accuracy

I have read many comments that suggest stock FZR tachos are inaccurate and i was wondering why.

Is this because the needle is hard to read while the ski is moving or are they actually/physically inaccurate i.e. poorly calibrated? Do they get their signal from a direct ignition coil pulse like PET and Tiny tach's?

I'm not sure about all the technical stuff, but I am sure that the needle is innacurate because of the bouncing around from waves etc. And can be very hard to read under speed.

I was thinking the same thing, this dosen't make it inaccurate though, just makes it hard to read. Put the ski in flat water and there are no problems.

Does anyone else have first hand experience with poorly calibrated or physically inaccurate tachos's ?

Other than reading it easy I recon its close to accurate mate,

If I hold my ski on 7700rpm on flat water via the OEM tach then pull a log file from my motec it reads around the 7700 give or take 50rpm.

I am almost certain the oem rpm tach gets its reading from the ecu. The reason I find it inaccurate is because it goes in increments of 1000 at a time so at 70mph its hard to pin point exactly where your rpms are at. For 60$ a commercial Tiny Tach will be your best option. In order to tune your ski properly, you need an accurate baseline and you need to be able to measure the effects of each mod.
