    1996 slx project

Started to work on her this weekend. Has good compression. Cranks over, but no spark. I bought a working e-box on eBay so I could rule it out...After swapping it out I found this:Click image for larger version.

Looks like it burned through at some point and someone spliced em all back together...yellow and white/ yellow were mixed up. I switched them back and the ski fired right up.

I ran it for 10-15 sec but I'm not outta the woods yet, it won't idle, and the front cylinder definitely got warmer than the other two. Thoughts?

Burned up the Black wire in the cable to the stator? That is what happens when the plastic battery cover is left out, and the battery shorts to the electrical box shell.

Usually what happens is the Black stator wire is completely toasted, and many of the other wires in the bundle are also badly damaged by the heat.

Be sure to check that stator cable all the way to the ends. There may be more damage, especially at the stator end, and even possibly inside the flywheel housing. Consider replacing the stator, as a precaution.

Were you running it with the garden hose attached? If not, check that all cylinders actually have spark, and that the engine will run on each cylinder by itself.

Yes the black wire was melted.....you nailed it. Do I have to pull the engine to get the stator out?

With temp diff and need for a little gas to run, I'm assuming the other two cylinders aren't running right...dumb question - could the stator cause this?

    Possibly.

Ohm test the stator using the links from my signature.

Also test the ignition coils, spark plug wires, and everything else related to the ignition system.

Don't assume the carburetors are working properly. If a cylinder is not working, but has spark, try priming it with a small amount of fuel. If it then starts and runs on that cylinder for a few seconds, the ignition in that cylinder is probably OK.

Can coils be re-wired? My ski came with three extras ( I still have to test them), but there are no plug wires on them. Can I install new wires? Can car plug wires be used?

It is possible that you have some corrosion in the plug wires remove the plug boots and trim the wires 1/4-1/2" and try it.

Yeah, I need to trim mine up when I get a chance. What about the extras? If I can "rebuild" them that would be cool.
