    True.

But you can fix it by just swapping plug wires at the coil or even the trigger wires at the CDI. Wouldn't stop me from buying a crank if I needed one.

thats the one that fires different but like stateed above all you have to do if switch the wires that go from the cdi to the coil if you go with a newer crank no big deal but it has to be done to run right or you can hurt the crank if she goes to fire and it back fires real hard

That would be hard without having them side by side i kinow one of them fires in order and one fires mag pto then cen or something like that but i think the 96 cranks fire mag cen pto or oppisite but they do go in order

Unless the seller knows for sure it's from a '96 900 you really can't tell.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's not a big deal to swap the firing order in the e-box if you have to. I believe it was mag and center that get swapped....you could probably search and find it talked about in one of my threads back when I was rebuilding my 900.

The MAG cylinder ignition timing is always correct.

The CEN and PTO cylinders are the only two that can have the ignition and crank phases swapped.

If the crank phase does not match with your ignition sequence, the engine will run really roughly. If this happens, just swap either the CEN and PTO spark plug wires OR swap the CEN and PTO primary ignition coil wires.

Sine the MAG spark plug wire is always correct, there are only two sequences the CEN and PTO cylinders can fire. Correctly (matching the crank phasing), or swapped (opposite to the crank phasing). It is not hard to figure out which way is right for a given crank because when you have it wrong the engine barely runs at all. When that happens, just swap the firing order for CEN and PTO, and the problem is fixed.

I've heard the older 900s fired 1-2-3, but I've never personally verified it. The 97+ domestic triples are 1-3-2...but my '96 900 was 1-3-2. It may have had the crank changed at one point though, or maybe it was only the very early 96 900s that fired the other way? You can tell by looking at the crank, what the firing order is. The 1-3-2 firing order was supposed to make a bit more power, because it allowed more efficient scavenging on the single pipe.
