Chnaging MSX 140 to use carbs - ignition options?

Has anyone tried to use carbs on the MSX 140 using MSX ignition or 1200 ignition system?

Yes. The Matrix conversions are based on MSX 140 with carbs and tuned exhaust pipes.

I think Kedanno (and someone else?) have converted MSX to carbs without the triple pipes.

In all cases the 1200 domestic CDI ignition has been used. The stock Ficht ignition system in the MSX 140 could be used with carburetors, but as far as I know nobody has actually done so.

What problem is there in using the MSX 140's stock NGI display with a CDI ignition?

As far as I know there is no problem. The Matrix conversions uses the stock MSX 140 display with RPM signal from the stator, as do all stock carb engines.

Same Yellow wire feeds the tachometer input on all Polaris 2-stroke models from 1995 through 2004, both carburetor and fuel injected, Fuji and domestic.

The MSX speedometer signal is different, but that is handled between the NGI display and the paddle wheel sensor. No wiring changes required.

The EMM will certainly notice the injectors are not connected and will trigger a Check Engine condition and injector trouble codes.

I have no idea whether the EMM would continue to run the rest of the engine normally with all three injectors unplugged :

I suppose you could replace the injectors with dummy load resistors to keep the EMM happy. It would then drive the ignition as per normal and the engine would run, assuming the fuel was delivered by the carburetors.

Only very mild changes can be made.

The Ficht system does not measure air flow into the engine so the fuel injection EMM does not increase fuel delivery when you improve engine breathing. Improved breathing results in leaner air/fuel ratios without much power improvement.

If you port the engine to improve air flow you must also find a way to get more fuel into the cylinders.
