STX 1100 DI hard to start

I just bought a 02' STX DI. It has been sitting for probably 3 years. Gauge shows 107 hours. The gas cap had cracked and water had gotten into the fuel tank.

First thing I did was pull the fuel pump. It was pretty trashed.

I pumped a few gallons of bad gas out, and had a friend with long skinny arms clean out the tank. I then flushed the tank with new gas, pumped that gas out, and wiped the tank out again. I disassembled my fuel pump and cleaned everything after I bought a used fuel pump from someone over at PWCtoday and it showed up DOA.

Amazingly I got it working again.

I installed the fuel pump, and pulled the line off of the out side of the fuel filter to flush out any bad gas in there. And did the same to the lines going to the injectors.

My problem now is that the engine is hard to start. Once it is started it idles and revs fine. It seems very responsive. After I shut the motor off and try to re-start it it takes at least 10 seconds of cranking, and messing with the throttle to get it to fire. Any ideas?

Another question. When I turn the key on should the fuel pump prime, or does it only run when you hit the start button?

    Sorry for the long post!

10 seconds is too long especially re-starting already warmed up engine on DI. There can be several issues like EMM, injector, plugs, low comp, etc. You should hook up KDIAG and find out.

On DI, fuel pump does not get the "ON" siginal when just the key is turned on unlike some other vehicles. Pump will turn on as soon as the start button is pressed. Do the volume check. Press the start button for 3 seconds and measure the fuel output amount. It should be 60 cc or more.

What is the battery voltage while the engine is cranking?

Also check the voltage on the DC power feed wire to the injectors (relative to engine ground, with all injectors still plugged in). What is the voltage while the engine is cranking? While running?

Tonight I replaced the cracked gas cap, and now it starts right up every time! Does the tank need to hold pressure or something?

the tank should have pressure if thats what your asking.

Seems odd that just the cracked gas cap would cause a no or slow start condition.

Right after normal refueling there isn't any pressure in the gas tank, even with the gas cap sealed

Seemed odd to me also, but that's the only thing I did to it.

I am suspecting it is a coincidence, and that some other cause is still lurking.

Let us know if the problem returns.
