    What is the nickel test?

Can someone please explain to me what the nickel test is? I have read several threads that make refference to the nickel test but doesn't explain exactly what it is. From what I've read it appears to have something to do with clearance but not sure. I hope its not the amount of step between the pump shoe and rideplate, because my ski does not have a nickel width step from the pump shoe to the rideplate. It's probably more like a dime width. I have searched for any reference to the nickel test and found nothing.

The shoe on a GPR should sit up a nickel from the hull.
