Leakdown test will test for leaking piston rings or leaking exhaust or intake valves or even a head gasket.

Basically, you pressure up the cylinder with all valves closed and measure the amount of leak down. You can usually hear where its leaking.
(intake manifold, exhaust manifold, base of engine, or bubbles in coolant tank)

Yes this is similar to doing it on the auto`s...can this be done with engine removed? what if there is a crack, can it detect that?

    Andy,

I don't think that with the engine removed it would be as effective because with a lot of the hoses and other things disconnected, this would allow air to escape where otherwise it would not. I might be wrong though but I like testing with everything installed.
