    Welcome to the Hulk.

Depends if you do it inside the hull or if you remove the engine.

Can it be done without removing it from hull?

It can be done with engine in the hull, if........... the stator screws are not rusted.

I changed the stator on a '94 SL750 and first tried to get it done with the engine in the hull. I was able to get the flywheel removed but could not get a square hit on the impact driver to remove the stator screws. So, I ended up removing the engine to make life easy. With the engine on the bench I was able to loosen the screws on the first hit.

    The complete process will be:
    Disconnect battery
    1) remove fuel tank
    2) Remove exhaust pipe support bracket
    3) Remove flywheel cover. Be sure to look for the starter Bendix bushing (thin washer). Sometimes it will stick to the flywheel cover
    4) Looking from the front rotate crank counterclockwise until MAG cylinder is at TDC. Rotate back clockwise 1/4 turn then stuff a 1/4"nylon rope through the spark plug hole of the MAG.
    5) Use an impact wrench to loosen the flywheel nut. Thread the nut to the end of the crank snout and leave it there. You'll want that on there to keep the flywheel from flying off when it pops loose.
    6) Rotate crank clockwise slightly, remove rope, continue clockwise until at TDC, turn 1/4 turn CC, stuff in rope again, then rotate clockwise to snug against rope.
    7) Place flywheel puller on snout, thread metric bolts (I forget the size) through puller into holes on flywheel. Run them in about 5/16". Tighten the flywheel removal bolt then use an impact wrench to torque it down. If it doesn't come off, leave the tension on there and pop the end of the flywheel puller bolt with a hammer. If it's still on there, heat it a bit with a torch and hit it again with the impact driver. Continue alternating these until it pops off.
8 ) Remove the 3 stator screws and the 2 screws that secure the rubber grommet for the wires.
    9) Remove stator wires from the E-box.
    10) pull out stator and install new one. Be sure to line up the stator. There will be a stamped line on the stator backing plate (side opposite the starter) that should line up with the point where the case halves meet.
    11) Reassemble in order and torque flywheel nut to 75 ft-lbs.

    That should be it.

    It sure can.

Even while on the beach of a 90* day and hung over. Did it at the Polaris gathering.

KJ is right about the stator screws, and the flywheel can be a real beotch to remove sometimes. Even if the engine was on your work bench

    Similar process, but not identical.

    Magneto/Stator

    Can a magneto/stator out of a 94/95 SL 750 work in a 94 SL 650?

    Briefly, but something will fail

Best bet is to get another 650 stator.

OR you can use the 750 stator, 750 flywheel, and 750 CDI. BUT, you'll need to rejet the carbs most likely.
