    Another Cavitation question.

New to me Yamaha 2001 Xl800. On the water at idle It obviously has cavitation problems. I can rev to 7k or so with minimul movement. If I rock it back and forth It'll get up on plane and It'll ride great untill I slow down again. I looked under the hull and noticed one of the protective bars on the protective grate had broken and it gone. Could this be the issue or is it more likely a wear ringe impeller problem?

If that bar went threw the pump, your prop is broken or bent. photos would help.

The impeller is in ok shape. A few nicks on the ends. I doubt the bar went through. I'll be pulling it off and replacing it and of course I'll check the clearance at that time. Just don't want to pull the pump if I dont have too.

If the veins and prop look ok, its time for a pump seal kit.

Your riding with a broken intake grate??? a few nicks in the prop is NOT ok... any dings or nicks will take away from performance... if you don`t want to pull the pump, replace the grate now and retest, that will lead you in another direction if the problem persists.
these ski`s are all about maintenance and work if you want to enjoy riding it...

just pull the pump and assure yourself that all is good, some time may save you money now...

I am waiting on a grate to get here. I doubt it will fix the problem. I can see the veins behind the pump. Looks like a saltwater rig as they look pretty eaten away. I suspect this may be the issue, but i am going to replace the grate first and give a try. I'll get some pics up after I pull the grate and or pump.
