1999 polaris slth 700 95 hp engine surges at 35 mph and tops out

I am new to pwcs and my boss just gave me his ski that has been sitting in storage for the past two years. It has 83 hours on the engine. I pulled out all of the old fuel and oil and changed out the spark plugs. The ski starts out running fine but when I pull the throttle more than half way to full throttle the ski surges up and down and willnot go any faster than 35-38mph

Any help to guide me in a particuar direction would be greatly appricated.

    Thanks,

    Gil

    Welcome to the Hulk

If the carburetors have not been rebuilt, that should be done right away.

Also check cylinder compression to see if any engine damage has occurred. Do not continue to ride it until you have done the recommended work.

Click my signature links and read up on other things that should be done.

    Welcome to the Hulk.

Is the red light flashing on the Multi Function Display? (gauges)

What is the max RPM the engine will turn?

not that im aware of... what does that entail?

---------- Post added at 09:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:45 PM ----------

i saw it come on today intermittantly for a second but i thought it was due to the oil level not being close to full because the lcd said "oil" after the light... i'll have to look at the rpms this weekend... thanks!

I don't believe this ski has a rev limiter on it. Try refilling the oil and see what happens

also sounds to be fuel related to me.

Whether this is the problem, or not, i would go through the fuel system completely. especially, after the ski sitting for so long.

rebuild the carb(s), make SURE to use ONLY genuine Keihin brand parts.

replace all fuel lines, fuel select switch, look closely at the gas cap, and filler neck. they can crack, and allow water into the system. also check the tank vent.

you can get some spark testers, and run the machine with out the seat, and see, if you are loosing spark at these RPM's to help determine if it is ignition related.

With it being a 99, I'm pretty sure it does have the limiter.

John is right, since you got the ski for free, put a couple hundred $$ into updating the fuel system. That should save you some $$$ down the road preventing an engine failure.

According to the wiring diagrams, and looking at the specs from the Polaris manual, the SLTH had no limiter and the SLTX did. When I rebuilt my SLTH, there was nothing connected to the grey wire from the CDI

Hey guys need some info...going to look at a '99 SLTH and this will be my first purchase. The gal is offering the ski, trailer, cover, new batter, and it has low hours. She's had it for 12 years and hasn't put many hours on it. My questions when I go to look at this what are some things I need to look at/inspect before I decide how much this thing is worth. She's asking $2500 for all...any help will be appreciated!! Thanks
