    GTX top end rebuild

    I have a 2000 GTX with 951 motor

I am curious if anyone has any experience doing a top end rebuild without removing the motor from the hull? Just wanting to know if it is feasible or more trouble than just going and pulling the pump and motor.

    Thanks

if i am not mistaken you need to remove a few studs to get cylinders out and depending on the hours on the unit would be the deciding factor. lots of hours i would like to check crank bearings and rod clearence

its better to take the motor out. its a hell of a lot easier putting the wrist pin snap rings in the pistons. plus its damn near impossible not to rip the base gasket. your asking for trouble if you do it the hard way, besides a motor can be pulled in a matter of an hour. pull the pump, pull the drive shaft, separate the exhaust and unbolt the three motor mounts

I guess I was going to buy the alignment tool sooner or later anyway.

    Thanks for the input

no need for the alignment tool. the redneck way works just as well. heres what you do. loosen the front motor mount, slightly loosen the rear motor mounts, take the spark plug wire off, turn the motor over a couple times, check the drive shaft and make sure that you have some play in all directions; i.e no binding. after that you are good to go
