I always reach down into the hull and put my finger on the edge between the floating ring and the carbon ring while it's idling - before every ride. If I get a bunch of water dripping off my finger - I know I need to replace my carbon seal. If I only get a little spot of water - I go riding. This is also a good way to check to see if the floating ring is seated properly - to make sure it's not wobbling.

More water than usual in the hull? Cavitation on take off? Cavitation at high speeds? Yes to any of these means change it.

Not hard, just requires pulling the driveshaft. You also need to do a COMPLETE rebuild.... What ski do you have? I will get the parts list together for you. I will also try and find the post of instructions on how to do this.
