550 tuning help
i have never worked on a piston port jetski. im trying to get my neighbors 89 550 running. cleaned the carb, set the needles like the clymer manual says, but its spewing gas out ow the carb when i open the throttle. in my past experience that means a bad reed, but since this motor has no reeds, what can i look for? compressions good at 120ish. it starts and idles ok. just cant get a good transition, and i have no idea how the 3rd carb screw is supposed to be tweaked.

sounds like you have a bad needle, and seat maybe? and or needing a carb rebuild.
the 44 "BN" screws are like this;
lowest screw = pilot. adjust this for smooth running at idle
next screw up = low speed adjuster. tune the low speed circut with this
top screw = high speed adjuster. tune high speed, and WOT with this.

Thanks zig. ill try it this weekend. on this si the pilot is the lower rear needle. the upper rear is marked H, and the lower front is marked L. sound right?
so idle is adjusted with the pilot, then what, 1/4- 1/2 throttle with the low and 1/2+ with the hi? popoff was around 10psi. carb internals look incredibly clean.
