Yes the extended ride plate helps alot. Ocean Pro makes 2 styles. The R or race plate. (about 2" longer)

and the O or ocean plate about 3 to 3 1/2" longer. Great for really rough water conditions.

Most often the R is a good choice.

Both reduces porpoising, helps accel, increases high speed stability, and doesn't hinder top speed. (although the O may scrub a couple MPH off the top, but who cares if you never reach top speed in rough conditions)

Addition of stock styled sponsons will help as well.

Finally a scoop type intake grate will help keep the ski planted to the water. The R&D 650 grate seems to be the most common used for good reason.

The SL hull is prone to porpoising and will NEVER be a good rough water hull, but these additions will help make it alot better than it came from the factory.

so how far out would i need to come to reduce porpoising effects? out to the end of the nozzle or further? then start cutting it down till i find a good mix of speed and stability is the any negative effects besides loss of speed by extending it out past the nozzle?

This should give you an idea of length. The pic is of the Ocean Pro - O long plate. It eliminated porpoising on mine by about 95% and the ride difference is instant as soon as you get on it feels a lot smoother on the water. I didn't notice any difference in top speed, actually I registered my best ever speed of 63mph gps on it!

I think the OP plates actually provide some lift and help with top speeds some. If you look at the shape of them, they seem to be angled down slightly, helping to push the nose down. I put the O version on my SL 650 and it helped a lot. Soon to be getting installed on my SL 900
