99 Ultra 150... Is it all that? 99 vs later models

First I would like to say I'm fairly new to this forum and if this has been mentioned before, I apologize.
Is the 99 Ultra 150 all that much better than the later models? Something about the ignition and it being able to change the timing on each individual cylinder as needed (something I read at GroupK). I have a 99 model and it is a little faster than the newer models. Stock vs stock. I know the plugs are getting real expensive and I worry about them becoming extinct soon. I have been stocking up just in case.

I just got finished doing a pump mod (removing flashing and casting marks inside the vanes and removing the bearing seals and filling the pump with oil) and it seemed to help the top speed. I was going 65 by myself (153lbs soaking wet via GPS) and now I'm going 66 with my wife and 4yr old daughter (another 160lbs and comparing with the same GPS). I didn't get to try it out like I wanted to as we were riding with others and it was getting late.
I will get to try it soon hopefully!

Only the early '99s had the advanced timing, which was good for an extra 5 HP. I really don't think you can tell any difference. You may be able to run the cheaper plugs depending on your serial number (I don't remember the cutoff, but will try to find it tomorrow).

I don't know about changing the timing.

Are you sure your Ultra even requires the pricey plugs? All of the 99's didn't, and even after the cutoff they still put the sticker on the airbox. Cutoff is in the 43xx range. (last 4 of your HIN) If you need the last 2 defined, I'd really have to dig.

41803 was the last hull number that required the expensive plugs.

The 99 hull is also thinner then the later years. That was great for some and a real problem for others becuase you could break the glass in the ocean in heavy chop and a moddded ski.
