Watch out this Christmas for gift card scammers

    FRAUD ALERT
Well, the crooks have found a way to rob you of your gift card balance.
If you buygift cardsfrom a display rack that has various store cards you may become a victim of theft. Crooks are now jotting down the card numbers in the store and then wait a few days and call to see how much of a balance THEY have on the card. Once they find the card is "activated", they then go online and start shopping.
You may want to purchase your card from a customer service person, where they donot have thegift cardsviewable to the public.
As the holiday season approaches, remember to keep purchases, purses,
backpacks and other bags out of view by locking them in your trunk. Criminals know to walk through shopping center parking lots to look for your newly purchased gifts. Also, be sure to keep the receipts separate from the purchased items. Criminals often return the items for cash or a gift card before you ever know they're gone!

Not sure if this is true or not, but I thought I would post it.

Ive seen this on email but I would have a question, couldnt they find out who made the purchase by looking where the ship to address was?

This is a true statement but some things to consider:

    a. Most merchants utilize a security feature on their gift cards ie: Wal-Mart cards account #'s are covered so if the #'s are exposed when presented for purchase it voids the card

    b. Most crooks are looking to purchase big-ticket items such as electronics (laptops, game systems etc) & the average gift card purchased is only $34.24

While the risk is certainly present it is fairly low so if you do plan to purchase a gift card ask for one behind the counter.

Thanks for the info. Jeff C. Hope you don't mind my addendum.

    Happy Holidays!
