homemade air intake / filter setup

I'm thinking about making my own air filter/intake setup for my GTI. I know I can buy an aftermarket setup for $85 but I'm a little tight on $ right now.
Is there any type of "universal" filter people may recommend?
    I know, it's ghetto fabulous, don't hate!

Also, under the seat there are two intake hoses that are about 2-3" and go to the bottom of the hull. Any benefits from removing them or shortening them?
My thought was the fact that the tubes are low and that heat rises. Unless it's so any heavy gases that are at the bottom may vent out? I dunno!

Sorry if these are dumb questions!

I see that summit racing has universal filters. So that answers the first question.

Go down to auto zone or kragen or o reiley or what ever automotive place and pick up a spector air filter. Hit up home depot or lowes for 3 inch pvc pipe. Bingo blamo your good to go.
