Red Oil light flashes and goes to rev limiter mode

I recently purchased a 2002 Polaris Genisis 1 and put it int he water this week. It cranks right up and both forward and reverse works. Seems everything on the display works great as well. After about a minute or so of riding the red oil light started flashing and it seem to go to a rev limiter mode just over idle speed? I have checked the oil tank level and it is full. When the oil light does not flash it again seem to run fine, but then goes crazy again and the light flashes.

There is no display on the dash saying low oil level, just the red light flashing.

    Thanks for any help.

The red lamp is not an 'oil' light. It flashes red for a number of different things. The message display tells you which reason the red lamp is for.

Does it say Reverse or Check Engine or HOT?
What are the displayed oil and fuel levels?

OH thanks, I need to do some more checking, now that you say this I believe it may had said reverse on the display, could this mean it is trying to go in reverse while going forward?

The reverse mechanism has a switch that tells the engine computer and MFI display when the reverse bucket is not fully in the forward position.

If the display says 'Reverse' then the engine will be limited to about 3500 RPM.

Check for damage to the reverse handle mechanism. It is common for the shaft to get stiff and if yanked on too hard it will break internally. See the thread discussing 'How to repair a stiff reverse lever'. It shows you how it is supposed to work, and how to fix the stiffness. If yours is damaged then you should repair it and replace any broken parts.
