Newb question: Sounds like there's rocks tumbling around aft of the engine

02 FX140, completely stock 235 hours - runs beautiful. I've noticed this several times, but didn't think much of it, but took a video and thought I'd post it here.

The ski is on the hose, when cranking the engine, it itself is smooth as butter, but it sounds like there are rocks in the engine just aft of the engine...what is this noise?

    I'd pull the pump.

OK. Why? What in the pump would cause this noise? A little more info, please.

    thanks

    I agree with Bex.

That is a common & normal noise on skis when running a flush. I used to help with the maintenance of an FX140 and it did that same noise, and my current SHO does the same thing.
Theres plenty of old posts on here and other forums asking the same question. I even was worried about it at first, but trust me, no damage is being done.
Its because of no load on the prop or drive shaft as the ski is not in the water.

    Totally normal. Dont panic.

This is a common noise on these models. I own a 2006 and it does the same thing. It is the gear reduction box at idle with no load. Nothing to worry about, Julio...

I heard same thing. Found rear bearing destroyed.

Interesting...two totally different directions to head. 1) perfectly normal drivetrain noise, don't sweat it and, 2) pull the pump, bearings are toast. I guess given the possibility that the bearings could be shot in the pump, it makes sense to pull the pump and at least inspect.

I'm a jet-pump newb - decent mechanic overall, but the whole jet-pump deal is new to me. Can anyone point me to a good write-up on removing and servicing? I've found the thread by Duke that details putting bearings back on the driveshaft, but I need some direction on getting the whole deal out and what should be replaced while it's out - i.e., wear ring, etc.

Im in Canton, GA, near Lake Allatoona - anyone interested in coming over for some beer and a "how-to" session if you're in this neck of the woods? I do have an electronic version of the service manual.

    thanks,
    Mike

It could be bearings or even a broken impeller--ask me how I know on both accounts.

I say pull the pump for inspection of parts because IF you have a problem it will only get more expensive. And it's not hard to pull the pump. Just do a little homework looking at the parts breakdown here in the OEM parts section and take your time.
