    2001 1200xlt won't get on plane

I was told by a mechanic after he water tested it that the intermediate shaft was stripped. I have removed the shaft and it looks fine, no stripped splines. I also had an oil leak. I found the oil line to the back cylinder had come off. I checked the compression and all three cylinders are between 113 to 115 psi. Could the loose oil line be the cause of the ski not getting on plane? The engine would rev up and I don't think it was missing. It just wouldn't get over the hump to get on plane. I am about ready to start putting things back together but want to make sure I check everything first. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Kirk

Hey kirk, Welcome to the forum.
This one is a little difficult to diagnose with out being there. The first question I'd have is what are your RPMs doing? Are you reving high but not really getting up to speed? or are bogging down a little and your RPMs are staying low?

I didn't check to see what the rpms were doing because I was going to have a mechanic fix it. The problem was at the end of last season. I thought the rpms were reving up. If it had a clutch I would say the clutch was slipping. What would advise would you give for both problems?

    Any chance its cavitation?

I don't think it could be cavitation.

If your splines look good, and if your coupling looks good, lets try to narrow this down some more. would it have more trouble out of the hole, like it was" peeling out"?

oil line was off??? any damage as a result? have you looked in the cylinder to see the condition of the cylinder wall?

stripped splines> if the external splines looked good, it is possible that the internal spline rounded off...

if that checks out, check the clearances between the prop and wear ring. proceed from there...

Been trying to help Kirk but don't know a thing about PWC's. Basic question, is it a direct drive between the crankshaft and the intermediate shaft and the pump assy, and is the purpose of the intermediate shaft, to compensate for different shaft lengths between models? Is there a clutch or built in slip joint in the shaft or if you lock up the fan you wipe something out. He was able to rotate the engine by turning the intermediate shaft so I'm thinking that eliminates the internal spline which leaves the pump area as the culprit if the engine is getting the RPMs

Then internal spline on the intermediate shaft is not rounded off. The compression on the cylinder that the oil line was off is the same as the other two. I didn't want to open the engine if I didn't have too. I assume if something was scored the compression would be different. I will check the clearance on the impeller.
