I just picked this ski up today for $100...i was told that the engine was locked up. I got home put my battery in it and it turns over but wont fire....I put gas in the carbs and it backfired once...I looked in the CDI and it has the upgraded unit in it...I have compression in both cylinders..(took plug out and can feel alot of air when starting)...I took off the fuel lines going to the carb and tried to start...NOTHING and no gas is coming out of lines from tank? I am getting spark from plugs (pulled plug tried again)....JUST NO FIRE!!

wonder if the gas level is too low and not being able to pump from tank...

    can anyone help thanks ALOT!!

Put some gas in it. See if it pumps fuel. Check the pulse line and make sure its clear. Make sure the fuel valve is flowing fuel and turned on.

Fitting in crank case (intake side near back of engine) with hose going to fuel pump

Do a compresion test first, one cylinder may have low compresion causing backfire.

Does the fuel valve have "RES", reserve picks up the fuel from the bottom of the tank.

The fuel pump is on the side of the carb. It sucks fuel from the tank-into the carb

Need a pic of plug wires/CDI. If it's the "original " ignition-the plug wires need to on the correct plug-if not it will back fire.

If you have spark-have compression-pour fuel in carb -it should run.

    Then, you don't have spark.
Low battery will absolutely cause intermittent spark.
It needs to be 10.6v and higher at the red/purple wire going into the CDI.
Everytime the volts drop below 10.6, the CDI shuts off = no spark

Still need to know if it's the old style ignition-to tell if you need to figure out the firing order.

Would suspect the battery. If it has spark with the plug out, but won't fire with the plugs in, its most likely the battery isn't strong enough to fire the plugs against the compression of the engine. I had this problem yesherday on my new 900. I could pull one plug and see spark and the engine would start on 2 cylinders. Put the third plug back in and no fire. I put in a new battery and off she went. I highly recommend the Odyssey pc625. Not cheap but very powerful battery. These domestic engines really need a good battery or they can have you pulling your hair out.
