    RX 2000 Starting Issues

Please can anyone suggest what i can try next......

I have a Seadoo RX 2000 with the 951 130hp Rotax engine which wont turn over and fire up. I have carried out the following below to diagnose the problem but cannot firgure out what is wrong.....

    • Replaced battery
    • Replaced starter motor
    • Removed ground cable from under engine, cleaned up and re-positioned.
    • Cleaned up all battery negative & positive cables.
    • Removed spark plugs and engine turns fine - can feel pressure from both pistons and from exhaust outlet.
    • As soon as spark plugs are installed the engine turns over once or twice and then just stops.
    • Spark plugs are sparking fine
    • Can hear petrol being injected when throttle is pulled.
    • Removed propulsion system to check for blockage.
    • Can turn flywheel by hand when spark plugs are both in and out - eliminate seized pistons.
    • When spark plugs are installed the engine turns over once or twice, then stops but can hear the starter motor just spinning.
    • Carried out diagnostic check with lanyard - all ok.
    Will appreciate any suggestions....Thanks

Sounds like the bendix gear assembly in the front cover is not staying engaged with the ring gear. The bendix is separate from the starter motor. Inspect the ring gear really good also. That's my two cents

Thanks for your advice. I take it that's an engine out job to replace the bendix? It was also suggested to me that there might be too much oil in the bottom of my engine thats causing the pistons to not move freely? Is this a realisitic diagnosis?

    mmmmm

have you done a compression test-the pistons might mve freely as you say but not enough compression to actually kick over under load?

    are both ht leads ok?

    have you checked carbs?

does it try and turn over but not start or just tries for a second then nothing?

not sure of the oil suggestion-unless its completely flooded in oil.

Took the engine out this weekend and removed the bendix to find 3 teeth that were stripped. So the starter initially engaged the bendix to turn the engine but when it reached the worn teeth the bendix slipped back in and carried on spinning. Im assuming this would be the cause for the problems im experiencing.

BINGO, Check the flywheel out as well since you are in there and clean out all the metal shavings. It's things like this that can cause charging issues later on.

Pretty sure it's carbed. When you read his OP he claims to hear fuel being injected when the throttle is pulled. Although he hasn't specifically stated this. Plus the title of the thread says RX2000

True there was but it's pretty easy to deduce from his post that it's carb'd. Also it doesn't matter much what model of RX he has when his original complaint is a starter not staying engaged with the flywheel.
