'96 SL780 Spark only after release of starter.

New to forum. Have troubleshot everything. Replaced stator. No spark while cranking, but weak spark with flywheel residual spin. Is a bad LR23 the culprit, or the CDI box. Coils all in spec, cutout sw, temp sense bypassed. Machine ran fine, stopped, fueled, and no spark when trying to restart. All grounds cleaned and checked. Stumped!

May very well be a weak battery. Did you try trimming back the plug wires?

Thanks Bryan. Battery is new, will trim wires tomorrow.

If the battery is new make sure its fully charged. A weak battery will show those symptoms. It just happened to me over the weekend.

New battery does not = fully charged or even good battery. Put a meter on it and see what it looks like while cranking.

This is almost definitely a case of low battery syndrome.

    Is the lanyard installed?

Must be CDI, fully charged battery, trimmed plug wires, all grounds check, all wiring secure and checked. It will throw spark but only after release of starter button.

If the battery doesn't deliver enough voltage while cranking you will not get spark. What happens when you let off the start button is that you remove the load of the starter from the battery, allowing enough voltage to the ignition system, which will allow it to spark as long as the engine is still spinning. Put a voltmeter on the battery and verify that you are getting at least 10.6 volts while cranking the engine.

Yea, 11.4 while cranking. I understand the theory. The exciter coil is testing at 449 which is within the 10% of 490 ohms. All others are right on. Are there test values for the CDI?

There is no reliable test for a CDI except to swap it with a known good one.
