battery light stays on
i have a 96 xp and it is running fine but the last time i took it out the battery light came on and stayed on. after going i decided to ride it like that. I rode it for an hour with no problems and my battery voltage is 12.8 so it's definitely not dead. Any ideas?

Check the battery voltage with the engine off then check again with it running.
If the voltage goes up slightly then it is charging if no change then no charging and you have a bad rectifier or charging coil.

That's another thing, the battery was at 12.4 before I started it and I let it run a while and it was at 12.8 so it's charging. Any chance these guages can go bad?

Check Voltage at the Gauge Connector...
Might be a bad connection somewhere.

ok so i checked the voltage going to the gauge and it reads 10.8 so whatever it is it's in the grey box. when i opened it up all the fuses checked out and i have a new rectifier i put in last season.
