Rear seal pushed out of case on 1300. Whats the cause?

After initially believing I was chasing an exhaust leak that was filling the engine compartment and causing idle issues, I found that the smoke seemed to be coming from the rear seal area. After getting better light and view of it, you can actually see the rear seal is just flopping around on the drive shaft. The engine was just built by what is supposed to be a reputable shop before I bought the ski and the ski now only has 7 hours and I have been chasing this problem for at least the last 2 or 3 hours. Is there any cause other than improper installation? I assume the engine has to come out and come apart in order to fix?

They might of put the crank seal in backward. It happen. Take the ski to them and make them fix it. I am pretty sure it will have to have the case split. Sorry for your hassle.

Thanks. The crank is brand new OEM as well so I don't see it being the issue. I figured it must be some kind of installation error to cause it to completely come loose like that.

well I got the exhaust and drive shaft cover off to get a better view and the seal is just flopping around on the drive shaft yoke. Which way should it bet so I can confirm whether or not it was put in backwards? I do infact have to split the case to fix correct? I just want to make sure I know the culprit before going through all the work and have the same thing happen again.

There are 2 oil seal behind the flange comping. It sound like the outer one is the one you see. I am not sure if you can just replace the out side seal like a main seal on a car motor. With out splitting the case. If the seal is rebid on top. It is made to fit in a grove in the cases. I haven't split cases on your motor before so am not sure what the seal looks like. I am pretty sure it has rebid on the inside seal. But the out side seal might be able to be put in with out splitting the case. Hopefully someone on this site can tell you. Sorry If I dint help.I will ask pale Rider if he knowns.

there are 2 seals in there and you have to split the cases to replace them

the seals have a raised lip all the way around that fits into slots in the cases
