XLT 1200 #3 cylinder quit, good spark

Just off the trailer from winter storage, my friends 04 XLT1200 ran fine for 15 min or so. Running about 55mph, it suddenly lost cyl 3, as in a fouled plug. Changed plugs, still dead, strong spark, plug wet, compression good. Boat runs fine on all three cyl out of water, but in water it may run great for a minute then acts like it has a fouled plug. Again, spark looks great. Can the fuel pump for a cyl go bad(crease a check valve)? I don't want to pull the carbs unless I am certain its not something else since its such a pita job(and a friends boat to boot). It just acts like it has enough fuel to idle perfect without load( out of water) but not enough to fire#3 otherwise.

sounds like water getting into it. Had this happen on a ski where it would rev great on the trailer backed it in the water and it would start running like crap, found a cracked cylinder on #1 leaking water.

Thanks for the reply, I found the problem today. The #3 cyl carb strainer was completely clogged with crystaline and also gummy materials. The carb itself looked perfect, but there was a few globules of gum in the fuel line, and the gritty stuff around and in the strainer. This boat has always been stored with Stabil, has 120 hrs on it, but he is not as picky about where he buys his fuel as I am. Anybody else seen this, or know what the cause is? Thanks to all.
