    Destin Area Riders

I'm trying to talk myself into dragging the bikes to Destin next week. I think the wife and I may start in Gulf Shores on Tuesday, but I'm not even sure about that.

Once in FL, I'll be staying in San Destin, but instead of crossing 10 miles of open bay (depending on the weather), I may just trailer back into town and hang out at Crab Island, maybe mosey on over to Ft. Walton...? Anything I should def. check out? How about a preferred launch facility in Destin? I know I'll want to rinse and salt-a-way the skis after each ride.

    Opinions or escorts welcome.

Bump... Flipping the coin about going to Destin this weekend. Likely I'll stay home before dragging the ski 6 hours for a day of riding, but I'm curious if any GHers will be in the Crab Island area?

We'll be in Orange Beach/Gulf Shores Saturday thru Tuesday but not taking skis this time. I'm down to one double trailer that needs a little structural work during the off season. Some crazy kid bought the Triton aluminum double I had at the Mudbug. He was at my house buying my old stand up, asked about the Triton and I wasn't interested in selling it so I gave him the "you'd have to be out of your mind to pay that" price...and he came back with the cash.

Anyone from the Hulk going to be in the Destin/Ft Walton/Crab island area on Labor day this year (2013)? A group of 3-4 of us from KY have a trip planned. We will be bringing RXPs and RXTs with us. Thinking of riding from Destin to Pensecola or Panama City on sunday. Riders familiar with the territory are most welcome to join us.

I may have some useful info on this page: http://pwctrailfinder.com/FloridaPWCTrailRides.html. Scroll down until you see the "Destin to P'Cola" and "Destin to Panama City" rides. Best of luck w/your trip.

Yes, alas, nobody has ever offered a trip report or video. You're certainly welcome to be the first! Based on my own meager experiences, here's a few thoughts:

Crab Island is a must, but if you're launching in Destin, then you really didn't go anywhere. But it is the place to hang out and do some people watching (weather dependent).
Depending on your skill level and what you'd consider being fun, if the tide is right, it's not uncommon to have large swells that you can ride from the GoM towards the bridge.
Heading towards P'cola, I'm also a fan of the small, uninhabited islands across from the Hulbert Field area in the town of Mary Esther. It's very scenic and quiet; you can usually get an island to yourself. Further east from there, and just on the other side of the Navarre Beach Bridge (then a hard left into the corner) is Juana's Pagoda. You can see the large tiki-hut style buildings from a distance (not marked on my site). Food/drink is adequate for a break to P'cola. Further east, just before the P'cola bridge (and just past the Ferris wheel) is a row of possible stops for food/drink. Docking is large, but maybe too high out of the water (tide?) and the area is somewhat "low rent". If you get across P'cola bay, there is a large spoil island that is great for beaching - Robertson Island. The island is also just due south of the P'cola NAS, so hanging out here might also get you some views of government assets on close approach to the air strip. Back in Destin, I recommend Dewey Destin's for a late afternoon lunch. It's got hole-in-the-wall written all over it, but I certainly enjoyed the food.

I, myself, have not gone west of Destin towards PC...

But really, record the moment w/word, pix, &/or vids and feel free to share them.

Great - I do look forward to your beta. Also, if you find something not shown on my site - food/drink/ramp/marina... - that you'd like to share, I'd be glad to add it to the map(s).

BTW, and I should have mentioned it earlier: A friend's wife said one of her favorite rides of the entire north GoM area was the Panama City to Port St. Jo. I have not done it. I imagine the ocean side of the trail is pretty much the same anywhere along the panhandle, but she really enjoyed the "inside" along the GIWW. As it is the Destin to P'Cola and PC to Pt St Joe are the two most viewed maps in the panhandle. Approx 2500 views each in the last 18 months.
