DO NOT BUY a Yamaha FX Series Waverunner or AR/SR/SX series JetBoat...

unless you have no interest whatsoever in learning how to repair marine engines

    or

if you just bought a new set of tools for working on your watercraft.

I've owned a 2006 SX230 HO since new and a 2002 FX140 for 4 years. I'm almost embarassed to admit it, but I know very little about these motors.

On the other hand, I can re-build a Kawasaki motor with my eyes closed.

Just make sure you know there are 4 different FX models. 2008 & earlier, there was the FX(140hp) & FX HO(160hp) which used the 1100 MR1 engine. Both are VERY reliable. 2008 also added the FX SHO(210hp SC'd). In 2009 they replaced the 1100 motor in the FX HO with a naturally aspirated version of the 1800cc motor used in the SHO, as well as adding the cruise & no-wake functions that are present on the newer FX hulls.

I'm looking at spending about 4 to 5 grand, what would be my best bet with the FX's? Like what to stay away from or what to look for?
Thanks for all the responses, they were super fast!

It might take a little shopping to find one in that price range, but I'd recommend looking for an '08 or earlier FX HO. The biggest things to look at are how many hours are on the clock & if it looks like it has been maintained well. If you look at a boat that's been run in salt water & the motor is a ball of rust, most likely it was never properly flushed either. Don't buy anything without test riding first, & it's not a bad idea to bring a compression tester with you as well.

I absolutely love my 2008 FX HO, the MR-1 engine is bulletproof and the NanoExcel hull rocks, it's the lightest HO 3 seater yammy ever produced...so look for a 2008 FX HO, the best of the best...

not that you can ever go wrong with a Yammie, but it you choose a 2007 FX HO, you'll get the heavier hull and if you go with a 2009 you'll get the 1.8 engine, that's why the 2008 model falls in between and is best of both worlds..
