    Solenoid Bad?

I just tried starting my Virage for the first time this season the other day. I pressed the starter and got about half a crank then nothing. I wire brushed all of the leads and tried again. Still nothing.

I tested voltage of the battery and continuity of the wires. All is good. I also put the multi-meter on the negative terminal of the battery and the left side of the solenoid (the one that runs under the engine, to the starter I believe). I pushed the start button, and no voltage was recorded.

I'm assuming the solenoid is shot, but I just wanted to check what everyone thought before I bought a new one.

The original black body solenoids with metal backing plate are known to fail. Replace it with the newer upgraded version.

I don't have a black one. The one I have is a brown color.

Brown solenoid is an upgraded unit, but apparently yours may have failed anyways.

Remove and clean the cable ends and studs. If no change, replace the solenoid.

So you think it's fine, even though I get no voltage on the output?

What else could cause nothing when I hit the starter? I don't get any cranking or clicking.

Sorry, I gave the wrong answer the first time. Not sure what I was thinking. Probably answering your thread while thinking about another

Remove and clean the cable ends and solenoid studs.

If there is still no voltage on the solenoid output stud even though it clicks when you press Start, then replace the solenoid.

If there is no click, then the solenoid may be bad OR there may be a problem elsewhere. Does the MFI say 'Locked' or 'Enter Code' when you press the Start button?

    Lol. No worries...

MFI says absolutely nothing. It's as if the battery isn't connected at all.

I know the battery is good though. Voltage reads fine and it started my other ski.

Does the bilge pump run when you press the Bilge button?

If it does not, verify that the thin red wire is on the same solenoid stud as the thick red battery cable.

There is a 1/4 Amp fuse for the MFI display inside the electrical box (carburetor engines) or a 2 Amp fuse in the wiring harness (fuel injected engines).

That was exactly it! I went to remove the solenoid today and the eyelet of the thin red wire had corroded off. I guess water got under the boot somehow.
