    95 sl 750 limp mode?

Our 95 Polaris SL 750 runs fine except that it wont accelerate past about 3k RPMs. The odd part is that when we hit large waves, usually enough to clear the intake, it will suddenly accelerate to WOT after it hits the water, and if it doesn't keep skipping across the water then it will slow back down like in limp mode...

It also does not appear to be charging the battery when we test it on the trailer. The MFD Appears to be off by about 2 volts but occasionally reaches 16v so we think something may be loose. We checked the electrical in the box for loose wires or bad parts but they seemed to be fine. We will open up the stator and check for damaged wires there.
My dad found a post about a 94 750 being limited when the battery wasn't being charged. Is this likely...? I don't know where the rev limiter would be...

That Eanswer.com thread doesn't say whether the replacement regulator actually fixed the problem. I don't see how a failed voltage regulator could affect the ignition on a Fuji engine It may be possible, but I am not seeing it at the moment.

Check charging voltage with a real multimeter, as the MFD display can be inaccurate. Voltage at the battery should be in the 13.5 to 14.5 volt range with the engine running.

Is the MFD fully operational? Any warning message on the display?

What maintenance has been done on this engine? Carburetors rebuilt recently? Are the original fuel lines still in there?

On the trailer we had checked with a multimeter and it only read the battery voltage at about 12.5-12.8
The MFD seems fully operational and there are no warnings displayed.
Oil block off installed. Triple outlet pump installed. Hoses along the fuel rail are all replaced and the vacuum hose on the pump is replaced, but the return hose and others we haven't replaced.
We did try replacing the regulator mentioned using one from another ski but it didn't solve any issues. We haven't rebuilt the carbs yet.

Was that battery voltage measured with the engine running?

When replacing fuel hoses, they all should be replaced.

Be aware that there may be a small brass flow restrictor slug inside the return fuel line, about an inch away from the last carburetor. If it is there, be sure to transfer it to the replacement fuel line.

If the carburetors have not been taken apart and cleaned internally then that would be a prime suspect.

We did measure the voltage with the engine running, wish they would charge otherwise . Even with some throttle it only reached 12.8...
My dad went ahead and bought a rebuild kit. Hopefully that will fix it.
We decided the charging issue is in the stator or the wires going since the box seems fine. Probably won't mess with that until we empty the tank if the engine ever runs right.
Worst case scenario, we got it for really cheap so we can put a little extra into fixing it.
    Thanks for the help.

Stator ohm checks are listed via my signature links.

Should have battery voltage on Yellow wire to voltage regulator when engine is not running. If not, stator or stator wire connections has a problem.

Voltage regulator just needs a solid ground, Yellow wire from stator, and battery voltage on red/purple.
