1996 Polaris jet ski taking on too much water

Jet ski will start when out of water and dry, but when placed in water it will not start and appears to be leaking from somewhere. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to Hulk!

Seals in thru hull coupler probably are bad, item #10

Also, possibly your flush line is not capped off properly?

    Welcome

    No start in the water?
    Check battery strength while cranking.
    Check cylinder compression.

I had this problem one of my SLT 780's. This week. I finally found that that water "IN" line (for the cooling) had rubbed the bottom of the exhaust pipe and worn a small, pea sized hole. VERY HARD TO SEE and A pain to change but now dry as a bone.

BTW - The way I found the leak was suggested on a green hulk post that suggested to start the ski whilst still strapped to the trailer. worked like a charm.

It was the seal in the hull coupler. Ended up paying someone to do it (not enough time), but that was the problem. Thanks!! Now the other jet ski is doing it. Woohoo!

Make sure to grease them regularly.

And are you running the skis on the trailer? If you are, keep it short. Extended running on the trailer will heat up the bearing seals and cause them to fail rather quickly.

Changing the coupler seals made the leak go away and now it starts magically? You said it wouldn't start in the water. Just curious if you got that fixed to.
