Noob w/ a Question. Please don't beat me.

    hiyas.

i'll preface this post/question by saying that i've been searching for a while now on the forums, and i can't seem to find a direct answer. so with that, i decided to make my first post one with an annoying question to which i'm sure has been asked about 14,232,234 times.

what was the compression on a new 1999 yamaha xl 1200 ltd?

i bought one off of ebay back in june, and immediately knew i had a serious problem. long story short, i had to have the top end rebuilt, and when i picked up the ski, if i remember correctly, i was told the engine had 118 on all three cylinders.

i want to know if this is good enough for government work...hence, the question.

thanks in advance! (and again, please don't beat me.)

118 on each cylinder is enough compression to run good in the water. What problems is the ski having?

    Welcome to the forum.

I Would invest in a 20.00 compression tester from your local auto parts store and check it. Piece of mind and you can keep track of the top end health as the seasons/hours go by. Don't take anybody's word for it when it comes to internal combustion engines. Its best to do the diligence and research/investigate with assertiveness.

Also if they tested right after the rebuild then it will test a bit lower than after you run it for awhile. Mine is up about 10 PSI after about 10 hours of riding at 125.

What issues were you having? Who said you needed a top end? If a mechanic, it is "assumed" he checked the compression, but you can still have issues with good compression. Did you have a reading before the rebuild? Sounds like the work is already done, so how does it run?
