02 XLT 800 piston damage on exhaust side

I lost compresssion on both cyl., pulled the head and found damage / warping on the exhaust side, both pistonsClick image for larger version.

Is this a typical falure? Any insight on what I should look for as I tear down further?

Unfortunatley it's a used ski with re-built engine - I don't know the history or depth of the rebuild.

    Thanks for any help!

If I had to guess, I would say PV failure. You'll know when you get the clyinders pulled off.
