Need help stuck at Beach with a problem

I have 1997 1100 waveventure. I was having problems with my fuel gauge so i took off the sender/leveler. When I took it off there was a tear in the boot that goes around the tank where the clamp goes I tryied to do a quick fix so I could take it to the beach but It did not hold up and now the whole boot is torn and there is nothing left for the clamp to go around so my question is can I take the sender out disconnect from harness and try to find something to cap off the tank like a thick piece of rubber and a clamp I ordered a new sender but I'm at the beach and want to ride tomorrow

that should not be a problem , when you unplug the sender the low fuel on the gauge will blink at you all day . Just be sure what ever you do to the tank where the sender came from is done in a safe manner that it will not leak any gas into the hull. At some home builder stores ( lowes/ home depot, ect.)they have some rubber plumming expansion pipe plugs that might do the job as well. Tommy Jordan
