Different things to different folks... this is why you can't always understand exactly the symptom.
Basically some of the more common symptoms:
-Front to back ocillation. Think of a rocking horse.
-Bouncing bow of boat, sometimes uncontrollable for no reason.
-Rough water pump unhooking, over and over.
-chine hopping in turn.
-Put your hand flat on a table. Touch only with your fingertips. Now touch only with your heel of your hand. Some skis have an unmistakable motion like this. Not necesarily porpoising.

In certain RPM's or speed and water conditions the nose will just bounce up and down...

A boat is porpoising when it is pitching up and down as it moves forward and when there is no surface disturbance causing the motion.
angle of attack
power to weight transfer ratio
can all have an effect to induce porpoising

Rolled up on some feeding near the Chandeleurs once. Don`t wanna mess with them. Teeth looked pretty badass.
