    951 White/Silver engine differences???

    Hi all,

I have another quick problem you may want to help me with.

I have replaced my blown 951 white engine from my 97 GSX ltd (silver and red boat) with a newer silver engine from a RX.

However I am using the white engine carbs and a rossier pipe, the carbs have got the correct jetting for the pipe.

I am also using the white engines MPEM.

The ski will not run right at all, it starts but pops and bangs and will not rev, checked the plugs and they are black, running very rich.

I think that some of the parts are obviously not compatible, but which ones?

Are the MPEMs different? Carbs? Stators?

    HELP!

    Thanks

    Grant

    The white engine application is
    1997.5 GSX

    The silver engine application is
    1998-1999 GSX-L
    1998-2001 GTX
    1998-2001 XP LTD
    1999-2003 VSP-L
    2000-2003 Sport LE
    2000-2001 RX
    2000-2001 LRV

The white engine also has a slightly more aggresive timing vs. the silver engine if I remember right.

two different part numbers for the module for the:
1997.5 white motor and 1998 GSX lmt. silver motor
    278000926 MODULE-ELECT.$523.97
    278001343 MODULE-ELECT.$523.97

The Module part changes again in the 2000 RX.

Now, in 2000, the RX came in a carb version and a DI version

1997.5 GSX lmt and 2000 RX carb use the same stator and pickup.
But the 2000 RX DI model uses a different pickup and stator plate.
The Flywheels are different too for the 2000 motor vs. the 1997.5 hence the different stator and pickups.

The porting was different on the white engines, so if you jetted for it then it will probably be wrong for the silver engine. I'm not sure on pickup locations...they did completely redesign the silver engines over the white though.

I sent you a PM if you still don't have the 97.5-98 flywheel and mag cup

    Thanks Bobby McCarty

Oh I forgot. for the rest of the you. The flywheel and the mag cup is the only differance. One is for the dual coil and one is for the single coil ignition. The 97.5 and 98 used the same mage cup as the 800 motor but the flywheel is diff on a 951. plus the dual coil and single coil 951 flywhell is diff

    Cases are different too,
The carbs are reversed. The high speeds are on top and the low speeds are underneath. Unlike the 98xpls and on up.
When you replaced your motor with the silver one, did you just buy a shortblock or a long block?

They flipped the carbs in 98 to stop the left turn lean problem (I was told???).

every thing else will work or can be swaped back and forth. including the carbs, but not the flywheel and mag cup. they are only 97.5 and 98. I think every 97.5 got a 98 or up motor by 99. at least in my area. i did about 7. the 97.5 didn't last very long in the ocean. on all our XPL race boats from 99 up we put 98 flywheels and mag cups so we could run the xp800 MSD enhancer and toss the crappy seadoo MPEM, rev limiter, and ignition. by the way I have about 4 of those ignitions left. That was a major secret back in 98 and 99. I think us and team deans was about the only ones doing it in 98. I have a rxx twin still at my shop that has a msd XP800 enhancer as well.

if he just dropped a motor in he is going to say oh crap, gatta pull tha motor!

Pulling a motor out of a XPL is super easy, I hate working on a gsxl, rx or a gtx. Seems they made the opening smaller. But its all pretty much easy once you get the hang of it.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

its simple. two 1/4 shafts with the socket allen head, then whalla comes right off. You can get those socket allen heads at Harborfreights cheap.
