    cylinder question...

Is there a difference between the "E" and "V" cylinder? Working with a 99 XL1200 Limited.....the old one has a 66V on the side (I think) and a "18" stamped on top..... the one I got to replace it says 66E (I think) and a "16" stamped on top. Not to positive about the "66" but I am positive about the "E" and "V".

    Yes.

The "E" is out of an 800 engine which has different ports than the "V" engine. Yours is the 1200 "V" engine. You should not mix them, and yes the "V" cylinder is the best for the 1200.

The "18" stamped designation is in reference to the piston size that you should match to that particular 1200 engine cylinder.

Reason I am asking is that I installed the "E" cylinder. I ended up taking the head off to remove the stinger and noticed the piston was jacked up. (chunks missing and looks a little melted) The head has gouges in it and the cylinder has some scarring. This is just great. The guy I bought it from stated there were no difference between the 2.

Salty is correct. They are not the same. If they were the same, what's the point in stamping them? Get your money back!

Look at the transfer ports, nearest to the exhaust port. You can visually see that they are not the same as the 66v cylinder. They should not be used on a single pipe 1200. They work well on a 1200 w/ triple pipes, but that's irrelevant here.
