99 SLH - Will Only Idle - HELP!

I have purchased a SLH. It started and ran, but would not rev up. Before it even hit the water:

    Replaced all the "Tempo" lines
    Removed all gas from tank
    Cleaned Water seperator
Rebuilt carbs with kit from SBT
Added in line fuel filter at carbs
    added fresh 89 octane gas
set needles at 1-7/8 turns out.
    checked pop off (20 PSI)

and the stupid thing will start and idle all day long, but when I rev it up, it (i believe the term is) "falls on its face". It just dies out. If I let off the throttle, it will come back most of the time. If i feather it i may be able to get 2k rpm.

Plugs are wet, but i feel that this is a lean condition. If i tune idle for max RPM, I have to turn the low screws out 4 turns, and at that point I stop.

Ideas? Is it accurate to check fuel pressure between the carbs?

    Thanks!

Did you clean out all the passages in the carbs. Check your regulator arm height. Is your pulse line kinked?

Yes, complete cleaning with carb cleaner and compressed air. Arm height is exactly 1.5mm as per book. Pulse line not kinked, and clamps are good. I could do a leakdown, but was not looking forward to trying to remove the exhaust to do that.

DId you check your compression? Has the ignition update been done on this ski?

Compression is low....95 PSI on both cyl. But in my (limited) experence, that sould not cause such a severe problem. I would expect it to run at more than idle. Ignition is old style. Ill check the readings tonight.

There is always some air in the fuel/water seperator and the inline fuel filter. Using my mightyvac, I can circulate fuel from the tank back to the tank and there is still always air in the filters. Is this normal??? I have seen the question asked on the forms, but never answered.

95 PSI is pretty low on a 700. If its too low it wont operate the fuel pump properly. Could be an ignition problem. If you plan to keep the ski for a while it will be a worthwhile upgrade to do the ignition update.

Did you test compression with the throttle held wide open?

I would not mind spending a few bucks. The ignition update seems to be about $500 wich is almost as much as the ski was. I guess I wish I could see run a bit before i sink any more $$ into it.

I believe the problem is rings. When i put some oil into the cyl, it raises the compression to 110 psi. Can I have the cyl honed and put larger rings on it, or do I need a larger piston?

Tested compression with throttle open, and good battery

I can answer that for him, I'm pretty sure the compression was checked with the throttle held wide open.

Ignition kit is $305 from partspitstop.com. A top end rebuild may be in your future. Pull the cylinder heads and have a look. You may be able to get away with honing and a re ring. You would need to check your piston to cylinder clearances after honing to make sure its still within spec. Luckily these 700s aren't difficult or expensive to rebuild. I rebuilt one completely for around 600 bucks over the winter. I think you will like the ski. I have this same engine in a 99 SLTH which is a 3 seater and it has plenty of power for that bigger hull. Should be a fun ride on a 2 seater.
