    97 or 98 XP limited

Im looking to buy a new jetski. Coming from a Polaris SL900. I know i want a seadoo XP, but im not sure if i should go with a 97, or if i should wait to find a good 98+ Limited or DI. Is it worth getting the 951 vs the 800? any major problems with either? thanks!

    I got both of those skis. Find a 951. My 97 does 57mph and 99 does 62mph.

I have a 97. It's really reliable. I've flipped it countless times, beat it to death with 20+ min WOT runs (really makes your finger hurt) The biggest thing is just to make sure to dry it out when your done with it for the day. Everything can be fixed on it with out much difficulty if you have time. I've had the fuel sender go out, the diode in the mpem, somehow managed to clip the wire that ran from the speedo to the inside of the boat.
Make sure to change the fuel line.
It's a good boat. If you have some mechanical skills and some time, you can get an awesome deal for a 97.
The fastest I ever got mine was 51.1 MPH and that was with a new wear ring, and impeller.

I have plenty of mechanical ability. Does 1650 for a 97 with a trailer sound like a decent deal? Its the best price I've found on any. Ill put the craigslist post.

And the main thing im looking for....is a reliable jet ski. Doesn't have to be the fastest top end as long as its fun whipping it around and pulls out of the water nice.

It's hard to say. They're about 1600 kbb value with out a trailer. They are reliable ski's if you take care of them. Take a flashlight and check the impeller and pump area. Depending on how bad they are, you could offer less. Cash is a powerful talker. If you go there with cash, he'll more than likely cave in and sell it for less. On the other hand, a new motor is a huge plus, assuming it was installed correctly. Make sure you get him to prove that the motor is new before you buy it.

Some things to look for before buying:
Make sure it's a new motor.
Check pump (housing, impeller, wear ring, VTS)
    Check fuel gauge.
Pull one or both of the large connectors off the ECM, if there's corrosion, it wasn't taken care of. May cause trouble down the road.
    Check speedo
Try to get a lake test before committing. It will tell you right away if there are any major problems
Check the bottom of the hull for nicks, deep scratches, crack... ect..
Take a compression tester, a cheap one from harbor freight will do. That'll tell you the condition of the top end. Should be right at 150 if it's a brand new engine.

I have a compression tester so ill make sure to.bring it. Thanks for all the info. He told me the power trim doesn't work. But he said everything else works good.
