starter relay? cranks while holding kill switch. 99 xl1200
Ok, so I've been working on my 99 xl1200. You can check my other thread if you want. I burned up a starter the other day. after i replaced it, when I went to hook up the battery. As soon as the lead touched the battery is sparked and the engine turned over. The kill switch leash was not on and i tried it while holding the engine stop button. What could this be? Starter relay? Is there anyway to check?

A couple possibilities, could be the start button switch malfunctioning telling it to constantly turn over, or could be the CDI box itself or a short somewhere along the line to the CDI box from the switch.

Mine did that when the battery was starting to die and I kept on pushing it. The seleniod stuck in the open position and would later go back to closed. Had to pull the cable to stop it a few times. Make sure your battery is 100% You can also check by pulling the back to your ebox and removing the signal wires to see if it engages when connected or stops when disconnected to verify if it is getting a signal from the buttons etc.

starter solenoid in black electrical box. identical thing just happened to me on same ski. replaced solenoid, problem gone. prior to that, checked start stop switch and starter. as soon as i touched negative lead on battery, it would crank. solenoid fixed it
