can fx140 Run temporarily without tps?

My friend has an 03 FX140. Won't go over 35, he thinks it's the TPS. If we unplug it for a minute and see if it goes full throttle will it read off the map for fuel? He wants to try and diagnose the problem before he spends more money on it.

    Backstory:
A few weekends ago he lost oil from a rotted oil filter while he was in NH. No warning light came on, he shut it off on his own, no problems ran fine. He took it to a mechanic and cleaned bilge, replaced oil and filter. Ran good on land, revs up, etc. Water tested it and can only get it to 10 mph. It seems like it wants to go more but something is holding it back. Tried resetting ECU, cleaned connections that could've gotten oil soaked, nothing worked.

Disconnected battery to reset ECU, no different. Revs up fast then quickly drops to 6k rpm. Wouldn't go past 10 mph or 7k rpm still.

He disconnected all plugs around the fuel rail that looked oil soaked and cleaned, no different. Mechanic replaced plugs and air filter as well.

He sprayed carb cleaner in the MAF and now it'll do like 35 at WOT .

without a tps in place you won't be able to tell the FI system that you've opened the throttle up. You need to replace the tps if suspect ( never hurts to have a spare) and/or get some diagnostic system in place that can monitor the tps operation. Consider $140 for the tps against losing the rest of the season screwing with this.

now a rotted oil filter is something new..was this an OEM version or aftermarket?

Stock filter of unknown age. And thanks. He ended up ordering one for $87 and it should be here for the next time he goes down. He's ski-less this weekend.

Common problem with the Yammi filter if neglected.........they can get small pin holes in them & spew oil out.
