    96 XP 800 Turns over/ Will not start/ Back fires

    So I just drove down to washington to buy a 96 xp 800 tow it all the way back home and sure enough its got problems

    Machine back fired several times ...so loud some one reported it as a gun shots and the police showed up... and here in canada thats a big deal. So loud!!!

    Machine does not start just back fires. Its a premix setup no injection, k&n filters.

    (If anyone has the exhaust hose for sale let me know)

    Sound like the rotary valve timing off.

    + 1... Did you fire it before you bought it?

    Either incorrect rotary timing, or no timing at all (i.e. broken rotary shaft)

    Yea like the other guys have said it could be timing or it could be the rotary valve cover itself is worn I've gone through 2 one 2 of my 720's and I'm just waiting to see if it is going to happen to my 800's also.

    how about we stick to one thread 2Blue. your first thread hasnt even made it past page two on the same subject. Lets not have a repeat of the last ski you tried to work on. my .02

    Different machines all together. The first 800 caught on fire and burned me so its gone. This machine has different issues.

    Back to the thread, sorry for the delay, the exhaust hose is destroyed because of the back fire so im waiting on new parts.

    Is there a DIY on this rotary problem?

    Also how do i know its not just the carbs need rebuilding?

    Any help on me finding a DIY link..that would be great.

    Also is it worth paying someone to fix the motor competly, or just fix the broken parts?

    Look for brass metal shaveing in you oil line coming to and from the motor. If you take off the rotary valve cover under the carbs and make sure the mag piston at top dead center and then put a degree wheel on it to see if it in the rotery valve timing is in the right spot. Then you will known if it is off.
