72mph out of an almost stock XLT1200?

I'm going to pick up our "new to us" 2004 XLT1200 tomorrow night. I'm water testing it before we sign the papers, but the seller claims he's had it up to 72mph on glass. He says the only thing he's changed is the impellor. Is that possible?

Maybe low 60's but 72 no way. 64 tops I've got a buddy with one and that's all he can get out of his, put a solas prop in it.

I got 64mph out of our stock GP1200R as well.

But like I said, he did do a prop change which he said resulted in the 72mph. I just wasn't sure if the prop change alone would give the extra 8mph.

    Thanks Again!

Either he's getting innaccurate high readings from the stock speedo or he's full of shit. Take a GPS and get a good honest speed. If you show him it only goes 62ish, you can probably haggle more on the price.

He's full of it. That's like the guy that i bought my rxp off of trying to tell me he had it up to 75 probably would go faster but he couldn't hang on to it, well i knew going into the deal there was no way because the dream-o-meter (speedo) won't read past 70.

Thanks for the info guys. I honestly don't care if it goes 62 or 72. I have very litte desire to go that fast anyway, let alone try to hold onto a GPS at that speed. It's for my wife anyway who rarely goes over 30. Just wondering how much BS he was dishing out, and if a prop could really make that much of a difference.

    Thanks again.

Good idea. I'll have to check if ours has a 'highest speed' recall. Otherwise I guess I could take the garmin out of the car and stick it in a watertight bag?

I need to know what kind of prop that dude is using, 8mph, saaawweeet!! I need one.

If the guy really thinks the stock speedo is correct and he's going that fast, I doubt he'll trust your GPS. Just do your test ride and check for the important things. No reason to embarass or piss the guy off. Good luck.
