    Polaris 1999 starting problems

    Hi all

I bought a polaris 1999 SLTX with a 1050 engin and can't get it to start.

I am getting spark but the motor don't want to crank up. I also moved the plug wires around to make sure it was in the right orientation but a strange thing happened. I had the MAG & Cen cylinder without plugs and was testing the PTO and when I cranked it with the MAG plug wire, the MAG and CEN cylinder ignited by itself . Is this normal??

I did the Stator check and the purple wire is not giving any reading but I still get spark on all 3 cylinders.

Any suggestion please were to start!

Weak battery. It started and ran when you had one plug out? My 900 did the same sort of thing. New Odyssey PC 625 battery and it runs great

    Bryan

Did you also get a open circuit reading on the black and purple wire going to the stator?

I never got that far. I assumed it was the battery right away and I was right.

It started with 1 plug out but only one time. I doesn't want to start for some reason, but still getting spark..
Might have damaged the stator. Looks like a Gen 1 inginition kit.

    Coil 4010174
    Electrical box 4060180

    Anybody that has a stator??

    If I can't find a stator I'll just get a upgrade kit.

Before I pull the engin I will still first try the new battery. Should be here next week.

Thanks again for helping a NEWBIE!!

Do yourself a huge favor and do the upgrade. You will do nothing but chase your tail without it. By the way, thats the only my 900 would start with the weak battery. With one plug out. Put the plug back in and nothing. Doing the upgrade will fix any problems you have now and ensure good reliability in the future.

What is the best place to buy the upgrade kits.

Also want to make sure I get the right one. Anybody that can send me a part number.

Is it better to pull the motor out to change the stator oris it easy enough to replace it in the Ski. I already moved the tank.

you should be able to pull the Stator Assy with the engine in place. You will put more strain on your body this way but that may be worth it. Look to make sure you have access to the front cover bolts. Read the manual and makesure you have the proper tools. You should be able to secure your drive shaft with a pipe wrench or other large fitting wrench from the rear of the drive shaft coupling to allow you to remove the nut on the front of the flywheel. The screws heads that hold the the Stator Assy are best heated with a small torch to release the locking gell used on the threads, be very care with open flame and gasoline vapors.

I wouldn't try to do an SLTX stator in the hull if you've never done one before. I had hell with mine and I've removed the stator on no less than 10 engines.

If you don't know exactly what you're looking for and what fasteners you need to remove/install, it would be very, very hard to do it blind.

Personally, I'd just pull the engine. It'll probably be faster.
