Two years,,,three different waverunners,, same wire from the same Pet tach that I ran thru the spot where your finger is pointing. Just be careful when you put the seat back on and keep the wire away from the metal bracket where the seat goes. A piece of tape does wonders.

No need to drill anything. About 5 or so inches further up from where you are pointing is a rubber boot that has the steering cables, start/stop switch wires and a couple other things in it. It has the "unlockable tie wrap" that Yamaha does like to use on the skis (thanks Yamaha). Just loosen that up and pull up the rubber boot. Run the wire thru the hole and then pull the rubber boot back over the hole, over the cable that you just ran and tighten the tie wrap. I will try to take a picture soon. I run my TinyTach and my GPS cables thru there with no issues.

I had the side piece off my FZR so it is easy for me to take a picture to show you what I meant. Sorry it took so long. Hopefully this will help someone out in the future.

You can get you hand up underneath to glovebox (for lack of a better term). The zip-tie has a little tab on it, so you can open the zip-tie without needing to cut it off. Lift the boot up and snake the wires thru it.

Next pull the rubber boot back down and re-tighen the zip-tie.

You should be good to go. Note that this rubber boot is for the throttle cable, trim cable and start/stop switch wires to go up and down in the the handlebars. I don't think that it would be too much of a problem for them rubbing against your Tach wire. I have three wires going thru mine. Two for the Depth finder and one for the Tiny Tach.
