    Help! Riva piston ring order

alright guys hopefully someone can answer this quick question. i am putting my motor back together with riva 9.5 pistons. i have everything in as riva specs stated

    http://www.rivaracing.com/instructio...01_1503_95.pdf

well after reading the manual it states that the top ring should be square and the second ring should be tapered.

well both rings were black and but the tapered ring was shiny on the edge. so i have the tapered ring in groove one (shiny edge)(top of piston) and the square ring in groove 2 and oil ring in 3. the first rings seemed to fit on both grooves the same but i didnt mic them. does anyone have an answer for this?

Are you looking at the stock manual? Because it will not be the same as the RVIA instructions for the RIVA pistons. Follow the instructions on the RIVA pdf. for ring placement.

What clearance are you running on the pistons? How much boost? Are you running open loop?

no i was comparing with the stock manual, the riva instructions didnt specify the taper just the "color"

.003 clearance, 16 lbs boost, open loop with thermostat

really all i need to know does the tapered edge go on top or the square edge ring go on top.....the instructions dont state that, just "color"

just want to make sure before i finish putting it together

Oh, I think your piston clearance is too tight for your set up. IMO

9.5:1, open loop and fairly high boost. I would be running .0045- .005 piston clearance and my ring gap a little bigger, too. I would ask someone at MTC what they think since they make the pistons.

Would altitude be a factor? Oh and btw the tapered moly ring goes on first and then the square ring 2nd

United Engine & Machine Co. Incorporated Here is a link for anyone that is interested. Also, some good info in the tech section in this website.

I am using the automotive info in the chart since our pistons are close to 4".

Altitude, temps, boost, AFRs, fuel, timing, compressions, cam, etc are all factors of course.

I have my RIVA pistons down at Duke's. Planning on going over tonight and will take a look. They may have changed the ring set since I put my last set in about a year ago . Check your ring gap mine were tight on 8.4:1 20 over, RIVAs. I have a set of CPs on order now. Thought I would try something different this time.
