Potental for Backflow into Engine with Center Mounted Intercooler (Stock X Model)

I am just finishing up installing a center mounted intercooler on my 04 RXP (I wanted to keep the resonator). I located the strainer on the cowl just above the exhaust manifold at an elevation above the engine (the only place I could find where I could access the strainer). Last night I had to make some changes and disconnect the strainer lines when I hear glug, glug, glug . So when I broke the vacuum on the system the exhaust/intercooler cooling system began to drain. I immediately begin to wonder where the water is going? The intercooler is vented, so theoretically the intercooler should drain every time (vacuum breaker).

So here is where you guys can help my knowledge. The exhaust manifold is jacketed and the J-pipe is as well, but the jacket terminates in the J-pipe and the water enters the waterbox from the end of the J-pipe? Is that how the exhaust cooling system works?

In that case, I am guessing that even though the intercooler and strainer (and water lines) are at a higher level, they will always drain into the waterbox or out the water inlet hose and there is no possibility that water can enter the cylinders. I am pretty sure that is the case because otherwise the X model cooling system would never work, I just want to make sure my modification of the '04 doesn't have any hidden defects.

Your right the intercooler should drain out the inlet pipe or yes it will drain to the waterbox. You would have to fill the whole waterbox before it would flow back to the cylinders, this would only happen if you were to leave the hose on without the engine running.

The fact you have the strainer above the ICer (by the sounds of it) that will effectivly trap the water in the ICer as it cant flow back out of the inlet, by the sounds of it what you have is normal.

The jacket on the j pipe stops as it enters the waterbox and has 3 holes which pisser the water into the waterbox there is no way the water from here can flow to the engine unless the waterbox is full.

    Hope that helps R88
